About us
Founded in 2022, by a group of scholars uneasy with the decline of the study of Heidegger’s thought in Europe, the European Centre for Heidegger Studies has the goal of safeguarding and rejuvenating the study of Heidegger within Europe and Worldwide.
The publication of the first three volumes of the so-called Black Notebooks was an important event in the study of Heidegger’s life and work. However, we feel that the publication of these volumes were handled very poorly. Rather than a careful analysis of the undoubted antisemitism contained within – and a sober consideration of its ramifications for the study of Heidegger – a media storm blew up. As a consequence of the disastrous reception of these writings, the study and research of Heidegger in Germany has effectively come to an end, and the ramifications of this can be felt worldwide. The European Center for Heidegger Studies recognises the antisemitism Heidegger expressed in some of his works, but maintains that his thought nevertheless has much to say of importance to the modern world. The European Center for Heidegger Studies aims to rejuvenate Heidegger studies in Europe via providing accessible lectures and seminars in a variety of venues in Europe and online via zoom, as well as short films and talks via our YouTube channel.
Having previously been based in the village of Frigiliana in southern Spain, the European Centre for Heidegger Studies is looking for a new home. The long-term goal is to re-establish a centre like that at Frigiliana; a place with an archive and library, offering the possibility of extensive and short stays, and where conferences, seminars, etc. could take place.
