Heidegger’s “Letter on ‘Humanism’” was written to Jean Beaufret, Paris (fall 1946). The text was revised and expanded in a few places for publication. First published together with “Plato’s Doctrine of Truth” by A. Francke A. G. (Bern, 1947). Appeared in 1949 as a separate publication by Vittorio Klostermann, Frankfurt am Main. Seventh edition published 1974.

The letter on humanism was Heidegger’s first publication after the Second World War. It was of great importance to the Heidegger-reception in France and is the link between Being and Time and his later thinking.
